Writers Website with Google Sites?

I know, I know — Sites has been the ugly duckling of site builders for the longest time.

But if you need a simple site, for example to support your writing ambitions, the 2016 Google Sites upgrade was the fresh facelift it needed to fit our writerly needs.

I did the website below in a few minutes and everything I needed was right in the Google Sites panel, for free with my Google GSuite (now Workspaces) account that I already had for my email.

Many other site builders (I’m looking at you Wordpress) are very complex to get started with, requiring themes, plugins and lots of time to get even something quite basic up and running.

Google Sites seems to be actively maintained by Google and gets new features every now and then, which you can keep up with by following their blog, filtered for content related to Sites.

There’s plenty of more in-depth tutorials out there that will take you through what you can do with Google Sites. The one from Zapier is quite good, and there’s tons of videos on YouTube as well.

The basic steps are:

  1. Ensure you have a Google account. A free one works. A Google Workspace (previously GSuite) account is best.
